Families of the Upper Country, historically associated with the elevated regions of Hassan, Chikkamagaluru and Mysuru.
Overview
The term Upper Country (Melnadu) refers to Sri Vaishnava families who settled in the elevated and interior regions of Karnataka. These settlements emerged as Tamil-speaking Vaishnavas migrated inland while preserving their religious identity. Over time, Melnadu Iyengars developed a culture shaped by both Tamil roots and Kannada influences.
Historically associated with temple service, scholarship and traditional agraharas, they played an important role in local religious and social life. Their customs continue to reflect the teachings of Sri Ramanujacharya and the values of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Even today, many families maintain close ties to ancestral settlements and sacred temples.
