One of India’s foremost nuclear scientists and a key architect of India’s nuclear programme. Former Director of BARC and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. Played a leading role in India’s first nuclear test at Pokhran in 1974 and later served as Defence Minister of India.

He later chaired the committee that drafted India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and has made significant contributions to science, education and public policy.

MEDICAL ENTOMOLOGIST • TROPICAL DISEASE RESEARCH

A pioneering Indian medical entomologist, Dr. M. O. T. Iyengar made significant contributions to the study of malaria and filariasis vectors. He served in the Bengal Malaria Research Laboratory and later taught medical entomology and parasitology. Several species and scientific names were dedicated in recognition of his contributions to public health research.

One of India’s most respected botanists, Dr. M. O. P. Iyengar is regarded as a pioneer of phycology (the study of algae) in India. His research laid the foundation for modern algal studies in the country and influenced generations of plant scientists. His contributions helped establish India as a center for botanical and freshwater algal research.

An internationally acclaimed theoretical physicist, Prof. T. V. Ramakrishnan is known for his pioneering work in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. A Fellow of the Royal Society and recipient of the Padma Shri, he has held leadership roles at IISc and other premier institutions while contributing significantly to modern theoretical physics.

A distinguished Indian-American computer scientist, Prof. S. S. Iyengar is recognized for his contributions to artificial intelligence, sensor networks, data analytics and computational sciences. He has served as Distinguished University Professor at Florida International University and has authored hundreds of research publications influencing modern computing and intelligent systems.

MISSILE SCIENTIST • DEFENCE & AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGY

Dr. Shubha Venkatesh Iyengar is a distinguished Indian scientist associated with India’s strategic missile and defence programmes. She contributed to the Agni missile programme and later developed “Drishti,” an advanced technology system now deployed at international airports across India. Her work bridges defence innovation and civilian applications, and she was recently honoured with a Padma Shri for her contributions to science and technology.
